God  Is Known  in Judah

In some Bible verses,  it is rewarding  to know the meaning  of certain words.     An example is Psalm 76:1-2,  which reads,

God  is known  in Judah;
His name  is great  in Israel.
His tabernacle  is in Salem;
His dwelling place also  is in Zion.

Many want  to know God  more closely  —  to have Him  as a friend  —  to recognize Him as our loving heavenly Father.     So, how can one get  to know God more closely?     “God  is known  in Judah.”     The name  “Judah” means praise  — celebrated.     We know God more rightly  when we praise Him  and celebrate  His wondrous power,  love,  and ways.     God deserves  to be highly praised  for all that He does.

“His name  is great  in Israel.”     In Genesis 32,  Jacob wrestled with God all night.     At dawn  Jacob would not let go  of the Lord  and insisted  on having  a blessing.     God then named Jacob  “Israel”,  because he had striven  with God  and with men  and prevailed.     “Israel” means “he who strives with God”.      When we pray fervently,  knowing God’s ability  and faithful love,  God’s “name  is great”  in our hearts.

“His tabernacle is  in Salem.”     A “tabernacle” is a residence,  a dwelling place,  home,  tent.     It is where the people go  to meet  with God  in worship and prayer.     “Salem” means peace,  peaceful.     It’s another name  for Jerusalem.     God lives  in peace  —  and when we go  to God,  we go to His home  of peace.     We can be  at peace  as we stay  with God.

“His dwelling place  also  is in Zion.”     God not only lives  in “Salem”  —  in peace,  but He also dwells  “in Zion”.     The name “Zion”  means a monumental pillar,  a guiding pillar,  a waymark.     It is also used  as another name  for Jerusalem.     When we go  to God  in prayer,  we see Him  as our guiding pillar  —  our waymark  to show us  how to live.

Let us praise God  as we struggle with Him  in prayer  —  knowing His peace,  and letting Him guide us.     Then  in peace,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  blessed be  Your faithful love  and care.”

Love,
Margaret
