The Deer Pants  for the Water Brooks

Nobody can live  without water  —  no animal  —  no insect  —  no plant  —  no human being.     Water is essential  for living.

In exactly  the same way,   the LORD God is  absolutely essential  for our eternal life.     Absolutely no one  can live eternally  without the forgiveness  and blessing  of our Lord Jesus Christ.     If we refuse water,  we die.     If we refuse Christ  as our Savior  from all sin,  we die eternally.

When a deer  is in great need  of water,  it  “pants  for the water brooks”  —  it thirstily looks  for water  to drink.     When people face  overwhelming problems  in life,  they look  for God’s help  to give them relief.     Therefore,  Psalm 42:1-2  says,

As the deer pants  for the water brooks,
So my soul  pants  for You,  O God.
My soul thirsts  for God,  the living God;
When shall I come  and appear  before God?

We need  the true  and living God  to help us  through this life.     Fake gods  and idols  can’t do anything.     When  “my soul”  longs  for help,  the LORD God  is the only one  who can really help.     But,  as unbelievers  mock  and taunt us  for trusting  the LORD  —  and God has not yet brought relief  —  we remember the times  in the past,  when God did help us,  we groan  in despair,  waiting for the LORD’s help.

We know  God is faithful  and true,  so Psalm 42:5  questions,

Why  are you  in despair,  O my soul?
And why have you  become disturbed  within me?
Hope  in God,  for I shall again praise Him
For the help  of His presence.

Remembering  all the times  God has helped us  in the past,  we continue  to faithfully plead  for God’s help,  as we remind ourselves  in Psalm 42:11,

Why are you  in despair,  O my soul?
And why  have you become disturbed  within me?
Hope  in God,  for I shall  yet praise Him,
The help  of my countenance  and my God.

Remembering  God’s faithful love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for keeping us  in Your everlasting arms.”

Love,
Margaret
