Behold, the Bondslave of the Lord

Behold,  the Bondslave  of the Lord

We can only imagine  what life  is like  as a slave.     The master’s  every wish  is to be carried out promptly.     One’s whole life  is dedicated  to serving.

When the angel Gabriel appeared  to the virgin Mary,  Mary was  “perplexed”  by his greeting.     But,  Gabriel said  in Luke 1:30-31,

Do not be afraid,  Mary;  for you have found favor  with God.     And behold,  you will conceive  in your womb  and bear a son,  and you shall name Him  Jesus.

The name Jesus is translated,  “Jehovah is salvation”  or “Jehovah saved“.     Mary could not understand,  knowing she was a “virgin”.     Gabriel explained  in Luke 1:35,

The Holy Spirit  will come  upon you,  and the power  of the Most High  will overshadow you;  and for that reason  the holy Child  shall be called  the Son  of God.

Gabriel pointed out  that all this  was happening  because…

For nothing  will be impossible  with God.       (Luke 1:37)

That was something Mary knew.     The Old Testament  is filled  with verses  about how God  created all things  through His word.     He spoke  and it came  into being.     That is what  His almighty being  is about.     Only the LORD  is God  and there is no other god.     In awe  and respect  for God’s authority,  Mary humbly said  in Luke 1:38,

Behold,  the bondslave  of the Lord;  may it be done  to me  according to your word.

“bondslave”  is one  who is either willingly  or unwillingly enslaved  to another.     In her respect  and honor  of the LORD’s most trustworthy authority  and wisdom,  Mary willingly bowed  to the LORD’s wishes.

The question becomes  how willing are we  to become the LORD’s  “bondslave”?     Are we willing  to serve God  our Savior  in faith,  hope,  and love?     Are we willing  to sing  His praises  as Mary did?

Seeing God’s almighty,  eternal love  and power  throughout His word,  as Mary did,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  create  in us  clean hearts  and right spirits  that we may always  serve You  most willingly  in all  of our thoughts  and living.”

A Christian devotional  to glorify  the LORD of lords  and GOD of gods.

Pray for our country.
