Being a Righteous Man

Being  a Righteous Man

There is a huge difference between being either “righteous”  or self-righteous.

“righteous” person  in God’s eyes  is a person  of faith,  who strives  to live according  to God’s ways  because of their deep love and respect  for the LORD.     They acknowledge their sinful nature  —  but,  in appreciation  of God’s love,  they live according  to the love  they have received.     Therefore,  they are basically honest,  kind,  forgiving,  and virtuous  in all their living.

Self-righteous people  only imagine  that they are good  —  and better than others.     They are very judgmental  of anyone else’s errors  as they want  to make themselves appear  “righteous”  while hiding their own sinfulness.     Their “good deeds”  are usually just a show  of obeying  traditions and rituals  that can be seen  by others.

As we think about Jesus’ birth,  we think about  all the ways  in which Joseph  was “being a righteous man”.     Matthew 1:18-25 reads,

Now the birth  of Jesus Christ  was as follows:  when His mother Mary  had been betrothed  to Joseph,  before they came together  she was found  to be with child  by the Holy Spirit.     And  Joseph  her husband,  being a righteous man  and not wanting  to disgrace her,  planned  to send her away secretly.

But  when he had considered this,  behold,  an angel  of the Lord appeared  to him  in a dream,  saying,  “Joseph,  son of David,  do not be afraid  to take Mary  as your wife;  for the Child  who has been conceived  in her is  of the Holy Spirit.     She will bear a Son;  and you shall call His name Jesus,  for He will save His people  from their sins.”

Now  all this took place  to fulfill what was spoken  by the Lord  through the prophet:  “Behold,  the virgin shall be with child  and shall bear a Son,  and they shall call His name Immanuel,”  which translated means,  “God with us.”

And Joseph awoke  from his sleep  and did  as the angel  of the Lord commanded him,  and took Mary  as his wife,  but kept her a virgin  until she gave birth  to a Son;  and he called His name Jesus.

Every day  we have many opportunities  to be “righteous”  in God’s eyes  with the same kind  of faith  and love Joseph had.     As we strive  to live  to Jesus’ glory,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for forgiving our sins  and leading us  to live  for You.”

Love,
Margaret
