A Decree  Went Out  from Caesar Augustus

When reading God’s word  to us,  we should not miss seemingly tiny details.     We might be  glossing over  a miraculous event.     Have you ever tried  to get  an emperor  to do  what you wanted?     Probably not  —  and most likely realize  that an emperor  or world-wide leader  is not willing  to listen  to your request.

But,  God Almighty  is fully capable  of making  world leaders  do His bidding  —  even when they  don’t realize  that they are doing  the LORD’s bidding.     That’s how it was  at the time  of Jesus’ birth.     God  had prophesied  that the Savior  would be born  in Bethlehem.     To make that happen,  the LORD needed  to make Joseph  and Mary travel  from their home town  of Nazareth  to the place  of their ancestors  —  Bethlehem.     God did that  by moving  the desires  of the Roman emperor.     Luke 2:1-7  reads,

Now  in those days  a decree  went out  from Caesar Augustus,  that a census  be taken  of all the inhabited earth.     This was the first census taken  while Quirinius  was governor  of Syria.     And everyone was  on his way  to register  for the census,  each to his own city.     Joseph  also went up  from Galilee,  from the city  of Nazareth,  to Judea,  to the city  of David  which is called Bethlehem,  because he was  of the house  and family  of David,  in order  to register  along with Mary,  who was engaged  to him,  and was with child.     While they were there,  the days  were completed  for her  to give birth.     And she gave birth  to her firstborn son;  and she wrapped Him  in cloths,  and laid Him  in a manger,  because there was no room  for them  in the inn.

Whenever God says He is going  to do something,  it’s a done deal.     Caesar Augustus was moved  to unknowingly make  a prophecy  come true.     He didn’t acknowledge the LORD as God  —  but he did the LORD’s bidding.

As we humbly trust God  to work out  our salvation,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for Your almighty love  that moves our hearts  to know You.”

Love,
Margaret
