My Spirit Has Rejoiced in God My Savior
Some people just have a mechanical “joy” over Christmas. They’ll go through the routines of decorations, shopping, and get-togethers. But, they don’t really know any sort of joy over God coming down to be our Savior from sin. They don’t realize the consequences of their sins or their need for a Savior. Either they don’t realize their need or they outright deny their need.
But, as Mary thought about the baby within her and God’s purpose of making Him king over all forever, she told her cousin, Elizabeth, in Luke 1:47,
My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
In Mary’s humbleness, she realized her sinful nature and need for a “Savior” from sin. Her “spirit” within her was filled with awe, and she really “rejoiced in God my Savior”. Eternal salvation from sin was important to her because of the LORD’s pure holiness and our desperate need to be holy in order to enter heaven. Maybe she was acquainted with Psalm 70:4, written by King David — her ancestor,
Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
And let those who love Your salvation say continually,
“Let God be magnified.”
Mary always sought to be pleasing in God’s sight. We know that because when the angel Gabriel greeted her in Luke 1:28, he said,
“Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.”
May we all “seek” the Lord so that we may “rejoice and be glad” in the Lord. Then, with the Lord in our hearts, we will bless the Lord and “rejoice” in the right way, saying, “Hallelujah! Lord, we want Your name and salvation to be greatly magnified in our lives. Thank You for loving us and sending Jesus to be our Savior.”
Love,
Margaret
