A Light of Revelation to the Gentiles

We’ve all seen  some sort  of depiction  of a person  having a great idea  or of finally understanding something.     They show a “light” bulb shining  above the person’s head.     The “light”  of understanding finally came to them.     Jesus Christ  is a “Light” of understanding for all people.     Knowing Jesus  turns on  the “Light”  of realizing  our utterly sinful nature  and our total inability  to make ourselves holy,  no matter how good  we try to be.

Jesus also turns on the “Light”  of His almighty love  and power  to make us holy  and worthy  through faith  in Him  and thus able  to enter heaven  for all eternity.

When baby Jesus  was presented  to the LORD  in the Temple  according to Jewish law,  a righteous  and devout man  named Simeon  was led by the Spirit  to realize  that Jesus was  the long-promised Savior.     In blessing baby Jesus,  in Luke 2:32  Simeon said  that Jesus was,

A Light of revelation  to the Gentiles,
And the glory  of Your people Israel.

Simeon knew that Jesus was able  to open up the understanding  of all peoples  throughout this world  —  and that Jesus’  ability  to save us  from our sins  would be  “the glory  of Your people Israel”  because Jesus was born  an Israelite.

There are Old Testament prophecies  about Jesus being  a “Light”  to this world.     One is found  in Isaiah 42:6,

I am the LORD,  I have called You  in righteousness,
I will also hold You  by the hand  and watch  over You,
And I will appoint You  as a covenant  to the people,
As a light  to the nations.

From the beginning  God planned  to save us  from our sins  by having Christ Jesus  pay the penalty  for our sins.     From the beginning God planned  to offer His salvation  to all peoples  throughout the world.     We need  to know  that God loves us dearly  through Christ  —  no matter who we are.

Looking  to Jesus  for the “light”  that we need,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for giving us  Your word  so that we can understand  the gift  of salvation  You want  to give us.”

Love,
Margaret
