I am  Going  to Send  My Messenger

God made many  very specific prophecies  about the Savior  so that we could be greatly assured  and without any doubts  about who that Savior was  when He arrived.     One such prophecy is in Malachi 3:1,

Behold,  I am going  to send  My messenger,  and he will clear  the way  before Me.

It’s a rare thing  to have someone spend his whole ministry  in preparing  the hearts  of the people  to receive another person’s ministry.      Isaiah 40:3 points  to this same messenger,  saying,

A voice  is calling,
Clear the way  for the LORD  in the wilderness;
Make smooth  in the desert  a highway  for our God.

The messenger clearing  “the way  for the LORD  in the wilderness”  was John the Baptist.     John’s whole ministry  was to lead the hearts  of the people  to repentance,  so that when they later  heard the gospel  —  the good news  —  from Jesus,  they would readily accept  God’s grace  and realize the depths  of God’s love.

Matthew 3:1-3  explains these prophecies  by saying,

Now  in those days  John the Baptist came,  preaching  in the wilderness  of Judea,  saying,  “Repent,  for the kingdom  of heaven  is at hand.”     For  this is the one  referred to  by Isaiah  the prophet  when he said,

“The voice  of one  crying  in the wilderness,
‘Make ready  the way  of the Lord,
Make His paths straight.’

Isaiah and Malachi lived  several hundred years apart,  but they both spoke  of a messenger  going ahead  of the Savior.     John the Baptist’s message applies to us also.     We need to  clear the way for the LORD  in the wilderness”  of our hearts.     We can get so wrapped up  in the things  of this world  that we can’t hear  Jesus’ gospel message.

We should not let God’s love be wasted on us.     Let us realize  our sinful natures  and turn to Jesus  for the forgiveness and love we desperately need.     Then with Jesus  in our hearts,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Your love  and forgiveness are so wonderful.”

Love,
Margaret
