Create  in Me  a Clean Heart

Honesty  requires  that we all realize  the sin  in our lives.     Nobody, except Jesus,  has been able  to live  a pure  and holy life  without sin.     When King David broke down  and admitted  his sin  of adultery  with Bathsheba,  he fervently prayed  in Psalm 51:10,

Create  in me  a clean heart,  O God,
And renew  a steadfast spirit  within me.

David realized  that he had grieved God deeply  and that gave David great sorrow.     He didn’t want  to offend the LORD.     More than that,  David knew it was impossible  for him  to erase  his own sin.     He had  to lean  on God’s almighty mercy.     No one can cleanse themselves  from sin  because we are all born  in sin,  as David confessed in Psalm 51:5,

Behold,  I was brought forth  in iniquity,
And in sin  my mother conceived me.

In explaining  our sinful condition  and need  for forgiveness,  Hebrews 10:21-22  tells us,

Since we have a great priest  over the house  of God,  let us draw near  with a sincere heart  in full assurance  of faith,  having  our hearts sprinkled clean  from an evil conscience  and our bodies washed  with pure water.

Because Jesus is our  “great priest  over the house  of God”,  we can come close  to God with the  “assurance  of faith”.     God has promised us total forgiveness  through the shed blood  of Jesus on the cross.     Our sins are fully  paid for  by God  through Christ.

So we don’t have to cower  in fear.     God considers us washed clean  from all our sins.     Just as God created a “clean heart”  in David  —  and renewed  “a steadfast spirit”  within him  — God wants  to do the same  for us.     We just need  to pray  as David did in Psalm 51  and trust  in God’s promises.

Knowing  God’s desire  to cleanse us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for keeping  all Your promises  in Christ.”

Love,
Margaret
