Except  in the Cross

People take pride  in a lot of things  —  especially their successes,  their perceived goodness,  their standing  in the community,  and things like that.     Their prideful thoughts  give them  a bit of arrogance  over those  they consider beneath them.     So,  they tend  to brag a bit  to let others know  about their perceived goodness.

Even Christians tend  to boast  when they feel  they are pretty good  in keeping  all sorts  of man-made laws.     Making more  of ourselves  than we should  is not good.     Boasting  in keeping man-made laws  is not good.     It gets us nowhere  with our Creator Redeemer.

That’s why  Paul strongly prayed  in Galatians 6:14,

May it never be  that I would boast,  except  in the cross  of our Lord Jesus Christ,  through which  the world  has been crucified  to me,  and I  to the world.

As hard  as Paul worked  to spread the gospel,  and in spite of all  that he suffered  for Christ’s sake,  he didn’t ever want  to be proud of it  —  or become arrogant  towards others  because of it.     Paul realized  that none of his hard work  and suffering  would ever earn him anything  in heaven.

But,  all God’s children  should “boast”  “in the cross  of our Lord Jesus Christ”.     Why?     Because it is Jesus’  shed blood  on the “cross”  that atones  for all our sins.     If it wasn’t  for the “cross”,  we would still be  in our sins.     Jesus’ death  on the “cross” made the perfect payment  for our sins  because Jesus lived  without sin.

That’s why Paul said  about the “cross”  —  “through which  the world  has been crucified  to me,  and I  to the world.”     Jesus’ death  on the “cross”  is so important  that what used  to be important  in this world  to Paul  became no longer important.     Paul no longer cared  about seeming important  in this world.

May we hold  to the truth  of the “cross”  as dearly  as Paul did.

Then,  in the freedom  of the “cross”,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for paying  for all our sins.”

Love,
Margaret
