The Rock  of Our Salvation

A “rock” is solid  and strong.     So,  we’re familiar  with sayings like,  “He stood  like a rock  on his principles.”     Our LORD  is almighty  in being solid  and strong  in all that He does  and promises.     Psalm 95:1-2 declares,

O come,  let us sing  for joy  to the LORD,
Let us shout joyfully  to the rock  of our salvation.
Let us come before His presence  with thanksgiving,
Let us shout joyfully  to Him  with psalms.

Psalm 95 goes on to mention  many aspects  of God’s greatness  in all  of creation  —  so that we don’t “forget”  that He really is  “the rock  of our salvation”.     The fact  that God is  “the rock  of our salvation”,  who can  and should  be trusted  in any  and every situation,  is why  Psalm 95  gives us  a word  of caution.

We are not  to deny  God’s truth,  no matter how hard  our trials  and tribulations.     Psalm 95:7-9  says,

Today,  if you would hear His voice,
Do not harden  your hearts,  as at Meribah,
As in the day  of Massah  in the wilderness,
When your fathers  tested Me,
They tried Me,  though they had seen My work.

“Meribah”  means bitter quarreling.     “Massah” means  a trial  to prove one’s faith.     “Meribah” was the name  of the place where Israel had no water,  ( Exodus 17 )  so they bitterly quarreled  with Moses and God  —  hardening their hearts  against all that God  had done  in rescuing them  from slavery  in Egypt.

God was letting them  go through this trial  to prove  their faith.     They should have remembered  God’s miracles  in rescuing them  from slavery  and sung joyfully  “to the rock  of our salvation.     But,  they didn’t.     Their bitter quarreling  attitude  showed thanklessness  and a lack  of faith.

After all  God had miraculously done for them,  they didn’t trust Him.     That made God angry.

Through all  our trials  we need  to trust  and “joyfully” praise  our LORD  with “thanksgiving”.     He can be trusted  to uphold us  through all our trials  and temptations.

As God cares  for us  through our trials,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for being our Rock  in time  of need.”

Love,
Margaret
