Crucifixion of Christ

He Himself  Bore Our Sins  in His Body  on the Cross

Ever so many years ago,  I used to babysit a five-year-old girl and her older sister.     The older sister wanted me  to read Bible story books,  but the younger girl protested,  “No!     I don’t like stories  about Jesus.     They’re icky!”

She did not want  to think  about Jesus’  horrible suffering  and death  —  and she had  no understanding  of our sinful natures  facing eternal condemnation.     Her lack  of understanding  kept her  from realizing  the greatness  of Jesus’ love  for all  of us.     She did not know  about verses   like Ezekiel 18:4,

The soul  who sins  will die.

We are the “souls”  who will  “die”  eternally  for all our “sins”.     There is also,  1 Peter 2:24-25,  where Peter described  our horrible predicament  with sin  and Jesus’ love  and perfection,  and then said,

He Himself bore our sins  in His body  on the cross,  so that we might die  to sin  and live  to righteousness;  for by His wounds  you were healed.     For you were continually straying  like sheep,  but now you have returned  to the Shepherd  and Guardian  of your souls.

So,  what do we personally think  about Jesus’ suffering  and death  on the cross  to pay  for our sins,  so that we may freely enter heaven  for all eternity  to live  with our heavenly Father and Savior?

Do we think  of Jesus’ death  on the cross  as an unnecessary,  icky thing?     Jesus didn’t think  that way.     Hebrews 12:2 says  we are  to be…

…….fixing our eyes  on Jesus,  the author  and perfecter  of faith,  who for the joy  set before Him  endured the cross,  despising the shame,  and has sat down  at the right hand  of the throne  of God.

Jesus had “joy”  knowing His death  on the cross  and resurrection  would give us eternal salvation.

Realizing Jesus’  depth  of love  for us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for graciously bearing  the punishment  for all our sins.”

Love,
Margaret
