He  Who Is Crooked  Though He Be Rich

Nobody has to be “crooked”  in their ways  —  whether “rich”  or poor.     Nevertheless,  many are,  no matter where they live  in this world  or what their circumstances.     God’s word speaks about  the “crooked”   in a number  of places.     One reference is  in Proverbs 28:6,

Better is the poor  who walks  in his integrity
Than he  who is crooked  though he be rich.

Those who are not “rich”  find it puzzling  how a “rich” person  can be so “crooked”  when he has no need  to be “crooked”.     With all his riches,  he has no need  to keep on  lining  his pockets  and tearing others down,  so he can gain more power.     But,  in his heart  and mind,  he feels compelled  to always  take advantage  of others.

Proverbs 17:20 points that out,

He  who has a crooked mind  finds no good,
And he  who is perverted  in his language  falls into evil.

In the Hebrew,  the word translated  “mind”  can refer to either  the heart  or the mind.     What one feels  in the depths  of their heart  is emphasized  in their “mind”  and leads them  to come up  with devious plans  to cheat others.     The heart  and “mind” work together.

Because Christ Jesus has suffered  and died  to pay  the debt  of our sins,  we need  to guard what is in our hearts  and minds.     Philippians 2:14-15 instructs all Christians,

Do all things  without grumbling  or disputing;  so that you will prove yourselves  to be blameless  and innocent,  children  of God  above reproach  in the midst  of a crooked  and perverse generation,  among whom  you appear  as lights  in the world.

We owe it  to our Savior  to keep our hearts,  minds,  and mouths “blameless  and innocent”.     Then,  when Christ comes  in His glory,  we can joyfully say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for leading us  in the paths  of Your righteousness.”
