He Who Began a Good Work in You
When someone has heard the gospel of God’s love and forgiveness through faith in Christ Jesus — and it touches their heart — “a good work” has been started within them by the word of God. That “good work” is the “work” of their eternal salvation. God has planted the seed of His word in their heart. This “good work” is the gospel message exactly as it is presented in the Bible — God’s eternal word.
We must be careful here, because not everything in this world that sounds good to us and “touches our heart” is honestly the word of God Almighty. Satan is also very active in promoting his falsehoods. But, everyone needs to check out what they hear with the Bible — God’s word.
When we diligently check everything out with the Bible, we can be more sure that we are hearing God’s word. The Bible truths are what we need to know — not some other man’s words. That is why the preacher, Paul, who preached God’s word to the Philippians, wrote in Philippians 1:6-7,
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. For it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers of grace with me.
Paul was “confident” in the fact that the Philippian congregation was diligently studying God’s word — and that they would continue to study God’s word throughout their earthly life. That way, God would be able to “perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus” — and Paul would continue praying for them.
God has begun “a good work” in us. Let us diligently study His word so that He may “perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” Confident of God’s leading in His word — the Bible — we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, thank You for working in our hearts and strengthening us in Your truths. Perfect us in Your word.”
