It Is Good  for Me  That I Was Afflicted

There are so many  different kinds  of afflictions  and trials  in this world  that no one can  list them all.     But,  each of us can reflect  on our past  and think about  all the troubles  we have been through.     Our afflictions  and the intensity  of them is different  from the experiences of others  —  and yet,  they are the same.

So,  when the psalmists talks  about being afflicted,  we can relate to that.     But, have we realized  the truth  in Psalm 119:71,

It is good  for me  that I was afflicted,
That I may learn  Your statutes.

Our afflictions are actually  good for us  in the end.     The psalmist might have gone through physical pain,  financial losses,  rejection by others,  wrongful imprisonment,  an addiction,  natural disasters,  or whatever.     Whatever he experienced,  he said,  “It is good  for me  that I was afflicted”.

He learned special truths  about God’s  “statutes”.     God’s creation is run by His “statutes”  —  His rules  for living  and  laws  of nature.     What goes up  must come down  —  doing drugs  destroys lives  —  in our pains,  God reaches out  to us  —  in our losses,  we learn  the treasure  of trusting  our Lord.

If we’re paying attention,  we will see  that God is actually using an affliction  to draw us closer  to Him  in faith,  hope,  and love.     Because we so easily  get wrapped up  in our sinful natures  and desires,  it sometimes takes us awhile  to realize  that God is working things out  for our good.     Romans 8:28 says,

And we know  that God causes  all things  to work together  for good  to those  who love God,  to those  who are called  according to His purpose.

The psalmist realized  that it was so “good”  for him  to learn  to trust  and obey.     God is the very best Teacher.     So glad for His faithful love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for caring  to teach us  —  even through our misunderstandings.     Your patience  is awesome.”

Love,
Margaret
