Even the Dogs  Feed  On the Crumbs

There isn’t even one  of us  who can claim  worthiness  of answered prayer.     We are all beggars  because of our sinful condition.     But,  if we have any sort  of honesty  and decency,  we have to admit  that God has taken care  of us  and tended  to our needs  —  even when  we have not really known how  to faithfully pray.     He cares for us  according to His wisdom  and patient love,  for the sake  of Jesus’ suffering  and death.

When Jesus came  to earth,  His primary purpose  was to fulfill  all the Old Testament prophecies  of a Savior,  so that the Jews could then spread  the gospel  to the rest  of the world.     But,  one day  there was a Canaanite woman  loudly begging Jesus  to heal her demon-possessed daughter.

One might imagine the Canaanite woman’s pain  when Jesus  did not answer her  even one little word.     The moment was so embarrassing,  the disciples even begged Jesus  to send her away.     Instead,  Jesus answered her  in Matthew 15:24,

I was sent only  to the lost sheep  of the house  of Israel.

That did not make  this mother’s heart  back down.     Instead,  she bowed down  in worship  and begged again.     Then Jesus answered  in Matthew 15:26,

It is not good  to take the children’s bread  and throw it  to the dogs.

The Israelites were the “children  of God”  —  not the idol-worshiping Canaanites.     But,  not even  that truth stopped  this desperate mother.     She affirmed Jesus’ truth,  saying  in Matthew 15:27,

Yes, Lord;  but  even the dogs feed  on the crumbs  which fall  from their masters’ table.

How true!     As much as  God Almighty cared  for the Israelites  —  He also cared  for all people  everywhere.     God cares  for every bit of life  that He created.     So Jesus healed  her daughter at once, saying  in Matthew 15:28,

O woman,  your faith  is great;  it shall be done  for you  as you wish.

Having faith  in God’s eternal truths,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  let our faith  be what  Your faithfulness deserves.”

A Christian devotional  to glorify  the LORD of lords  and GOD of gods.

Pray for our country.
