Would You  Betray  the Son  of Man  With a Kiss?

It’s hard  to know  what one might do  in the face  of fierce fear.     Like Peter,  we might find ourselves  denying our Lord — and then regretting it  with truly repentant tears.     But,  when our hearts  and minds  are flooded  with unbelief  and greed,  one finds themselves  willing  to actually deny  all truth  that has repeatedly proven itself  to be truth.     Such was the case  with Judas.     Luke 22:47-48 records,

While He  (Jesus)  was still speaking,  there came a crowd,  and the man  called Judas,  one of the twelve,  was leading them.     He drew near  to Jesus  to kiss Him,  but  Jesus said  to him,  “Judas,  would you  betray  the Son  of Man  with a kiss?

What a shame!     Betraying  with a “kiss”.     A  “kiss”  is supposed  to be a sign  of fidelity  —  a sign  of love  and faithfulness.     But,  to Judas,  it was a way  to deceive.     No one  can deceive Jesus,  our LORD  and Savior.     He knows  all things.     Jesus’  loving comment  should have made Judas stop.     But,  his heart  was hardened  to the point  of being unable  to do  what he knew  was right.

Jesus’ comment  should have brought him to repentant tears  —  but it didn’t.     Judas’ ongoing practice of deceiving  ( his stealing from the purse ),   had hardened  his heart.     Having followed Jesus  for three years  —  listening to His teachings  —  seeing His miracles  —  made no effect  on Judas’ heart  and mind.

The question is  —  what effect  has Jesus’ teaching,  sacrifice,  and resurrection  had  on our lives?     We’ve seen  the resurrection  —  Judas didn’t.     In this time  of many witnesses  to Jesus’ resurrection,  do we  “betray  the Son  of Man  with a kiss?”     Do we betray Jesus  with a lack  of praise  or by willfully living  in sin?

Considering God’s love  and mercy,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for washing away  our sins  through Your shed blood  on the cross.”

Love,
Margaret
