They Boast  About Themselves  and Flatter

In general,  people don’t like  to hear about all sorts  of sins  and the eternal judgment  that those sins  will bring.     They think it’s nobody’s business  how they live  their lives  —  and they get very angry  when anyone mentions sins  —  especially theirs.     But,  we’re all sinners,  and we all need  to curb  our sinful tendencies.     There are no exceptions.

So,  when the Epistle of Jude condemns  all sorts of sins,  we all really need  to listen up.     We would be wise  to pay close attention  to this short epistle.     After describing some sins,  Jude 1:16 says  about the arrogant sinners,

These people  are grumblers  and faultfinders;  they follow their own evil desires;  they boast about themselves  and flatter others  for their own advantage.

We see a lot of this  going on these days.     A lot of boasting seems  to convince others  that the boaster really is great.     And,  people have always liked being flattered  —  so they automatically tend  to approve  of the flatterer,  even as they are being taken “advantage” of.     But,  Jesus also warned us  about being misled  in these end times.     We must be careful  about not following anyone  who boasts  and wants us  to follow ungodly desires.

God’s children need  to be different  from the rest  of this world.     We are not  to follow the lead  of those who revel  in their sinfulness and want us  to join them.     So, Jude 1:20-21 says,

But you,  dear friends,  by building yourselves up  in your most holy faith  and praying  in the Holy Spirit,  keep yourselves  in God’s love  as you wait  for the mercy  of our Lord Jesus Christ  to bring you  to eternal life.

We are built up  “in your most holy faith”  by studying God’s word  and prayer.     That’s the only way to stay  “in God’s love”.     Letting God  hold our hand,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  it’s so good  to be with You!”

Love,
Margaret
