As He Thinks  Within Himself,  So He Is

This can be  a mighty confusing world  when we don’t take  the love,  time,  and effort  to study God’s word  to us.     God’s word  often warns us  of those  who twist  and manipulate  His word  —  changing it  into a total untruth  that will  bring destruction  upon us.

One example  of twisting  is the use  of Proverbs 23:6-8,

Do not eat  the bread  of a selfish man,
Or desire  his delicacies;
For as he thinks  within himself,  so he is.
He says  to you,  “Eat  and drink!”
But his heart  is not  with you.
You will vomit up  the morsel  you have eaten,
And waste your compliments.

In this full context,  Solomon is warning us  to not accept things  from a “selfish man”.     A “selfish” person  might invite one to “Eat and drink!”,  but his only real intent  is to use you  for his own benefit.     In actuality,  he despises  the person he invited  to  “Eat and drink!”     Being despised  is devastating.     So,  we should not  desire anything  from selfish people.

Ungodly people  will take just  one phrase  out of this whole Proverbs context,  and just quote,  “As he thinks  within himself  so he is”.     They will then proceed  to teach  a false doctrine  of “positive thinking”.     They will teach  that all  of one’s life  is  whatever we think.     They don’t give God credit  for anything  or accept  salvation through faith.     They claim  one can be successful  if he rightly  and positively thinks  of success.     They also say  that all men  are the master  of their thoughts  —  so that faith and trust  in God  are inconsequential.

Since they consider man  the “lord”  of his own thoughts,  they say man must master  his thoughts  to create a successful life.     Their philosophy  goes into deep details  —  disregarding God Almighty.     Their deceptions have bamboozled many  —  but God’s children  must remain aware  of every deception  in this world.

Thankful  for God’s life-giving truths  in Christ Jesus,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for Your proven eternal truths.”

Love,
Margaret
