The Help  of My Countenance

Our face can reveal  our heartfelt feelings  — joy,  pleasure,  dislike,  repulsion,  sadness,  interest,  boredom,  approval,  disapproval,  discouragement,  hope,  hopelessness.     Our feelings  about our circumstances  in life  are often written  on our face.     That’s our “countenance”.

When Israel  was in captivity  as a consequence  of their sins,  even God’s faithful  children were taken  into exile,  along with the unfaithful Israelites.     In captivity,  God’s faithful yearned  for the goodness  of living  in Israel  with God’s blessings.     So,  the psalmist wrote  in Psalm 42:11,

Why  are you  in despair,  O my soul?
And why have you  become disturbed  within me?
Hope  in God,  for I shall yet  praise Him,
The help  of my countenance  and my God.

Only God  is our “hope”.     Only He  can put joy back  in our hearts  and on our faces.     We might tend  to “despair”,  but we need  to constantly remember God’s love,  salvation,  righteousness,  and faithfulness.     At the right time,  God will set things straight.     So,  when we feel “despair”  coming on,  we are to,  “Hope  in God”.     The day will surely come when  “I shall yet  praise Him”.

When we put our  “hope  in God”,  He will bless us,  so that we will  “praise Him”.     When all is said  and done,  we will understand  God’s love  and wisdom  in allowing us  to face certain trials.     Realizing  that God has been  beside us  all the way,  strengthening our every step  will make us appreciatively  “praise Him”.

Seeing God’s faithfulness,  we will understand how  Titus 3:7 has been working in our lives,

…so that being justified  by His grace  we would be made heirs  according to the hope  of eternal life.

God will not disappoint our “hope”  and faith  in Him.     As  “heirs”  of “eternal life”,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for sticking close  to us  as we face our various trials.”

Love,
Margaret
