Defiled

Christians want to be  in a right standing  with God  because we lovingly treasure  our salvation  in Jesus.     But,  it’s sad  how people will religiously  keep certain traditions,  rituals,  and customs  imagining that it’s their keeping  these things  that makes them good  and holy.     They imagine  that these customs  and religious rules  will make God approve  of them.     That’s how it was  when the Jewish leaders  had Jesus arrested  by the Roman soldiers  and taken to court.

Those Jewish leaders  were very particular  in keeping Jewish laws about being “ritually clean”  for the celebration  of the Passover.     They didn’t want  to touch anything belonging  to an unbeliever.     Therefore,  John 18:28  records,

Then they led Jesus  from Caiaphas  into the Praetorium,  and it was early;  and they themselves  did not enter  into the Praetorium  so that  they would not be defiled,  but might  eat the Passover.

They wanted  to be ritually clean  to “eat the Passover”,  which celebrated  God freeing them  from slavery  in Egypt.     They didn’t want  to touch anything  in the Roman governor’s palace,  thinking it would defile them.

But,  they had no clue  that they were already  “defiled”  because  of all the evil  in their hearts  in wanting  to kill  our Savior,  Jesus,  who frees us  from our slavery  to sin.     Their slavishness  to traditions  “defiled” their hearts  and blinded them  to God’s love.

That’s why Jesus taught  in Mark 7:14-16,

Listen to Me,  all of you,  and understand:   there is nothing outside  the man  which can defile him  if it goes into him;  but the things  which proceed out  of the man  are what  defile the man.     If anyone  has ears  to hear,  let him hear.

We need  to watch  our hearts  and minds.     Do faith,  hope,  and love  guide our lives  into living  according to God’s truths  in the Bible?

Gladly accepting salvation  through Jesus alone,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for making us clean  through Your shed blood  on the cross.”

Love,
Margaret
