If  They Do These Things  When the Tree  Is Green

It’s spring,  and the buds  are budding  on the trees  as rain drops drip  from the branches.     New life  is springing up in all  of nature.     It’s so good.

This is also the time  of year  when Jesus was condemned  to die on the cross  —  even though He was innocent  —  even though He had healed  so many people  and preached the truths  of God’s word.     His goodness  and righteousness  were despised  by many of the jealous Jewish religious leaders.     Luke 23:27-31  tells of an incident  that took place  as Jesus was being taken  to His crucifixion.

And following Him  was a large crowd  of the people,  and women  who were mourning  and lamenting Him.

But  Jesus turning to them said,  “Daughters  of Jerusalem,  stop weeping  for Me,  but weep  for yourselves  and for your children.     For behold,  the days are coming  when they will say,  ‘Blessed are  the barren,  and the wombs  that never bore,  and the breasts  that never nursed.’     Then they will begin  to say  to the mountains,  ‘Fall  on us,’  and to the hills,  ‘Cover us’.     For if they do these things  when the tree  is green,  what will happen  when it is dry?”

When our Savior  came to earth,  “the tree was green”.     That was the beginning  of the fresh,  new covenant  of forgiveness  and peace with God  for all  who put their faith  in Jesus.     Jesus’ sacrificial death  on the cross  paid for all our sins,  so we are free  to live a new life  in Him.     People had real joy  in their new faith.

But,  along side  the joy  of the believers  was also the sins  of the unbelievers  who wanted  to destroy Jesus.     When we think  of how much evil hatred  was going on  at that time  —  we need  to be aware  that in the end days,  just before Judgment Day,  it will be much worse  —  because then  the “tree”  will be “dry”.     The end days  will be so evil  that people will realize  that childless women are really “blessed”  because they won’t have to cry over the evil happening  to their children.

Killing Jesus was horrifically evil.     The end days  will be more so  —  and we can see evils spreading  in so many aspects  of life.     Because God is in control,  we need  to keep our eyes  and faith  on Him.

Knowing God’s almighty power  to save,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Be with us,  Lord Jesus.”

Love,
Margaret
