This Is the Day Which the LORD Has Made

This Is the Day  Which the LORD  Has Made

When a Bible verse  is taken out  of context,  it is easily imagined  to say something different  from God’s intended meaning.     We might often hear someone quote  Psalm 118:24,

This is the day  which the LORD has made;
Let us rejoice  and be glad  in it.”

People will quote Psalm 118  to encourage another  to be more positive  so that their day  will “go better”.     It’s like saying,  “Chin up.     Things will get better  when you put on  a happy face.”     But,  that is not at all  what God’s word  is saying.     Part  of the actual context says  in Psalm 118:22-24,

The stone  which the builders rejected
Has become the chief  corner stone.
This is the LORD’s doing;
It is marvelous  in our eyes.
This is the day  which the LORD  has made;
Let us rejoice  and be glad  in it.

This psalm goes on  to describe the sacrificial lamb  and our utter need  to be saved.     So,  what’s it all about?     Psalm 118  is a prophecy  about our Savior,  Jesus.     Jesus quotes  this psalm  in Mark 12.     There  Jesus  was teaching  by telling parables  to describe  how the Jews  would reject  their Savior  and kill Him.     Jesus then quoted  how “the stone  which the builders rejected  has become the chief  corner stone”.

“The stone  which the builders rejected”  was Jesus.     Many Jewish leaders rejected Him  as their Savior.     But,  He became  “the chief  corner stone”.     Just as Jesus indicated  in His Mark 12:1-12 parable,  He was rejected  and killed  by the religious leaders.     But now He is in heaven as King of kings and Lord of lords  —  “the chief  corner stone”.

The bottom line:   The people rejected their Savior,  but the LORD  made our crucified Savior  the King of kings  —  the chief corner stone.     The day Jesus rose  from the dead is  “the day  which the LORD  has made”.     That is why we can  “rejoice  and be glad”.     We have a Savior,  who died for our sins  and rose victorious.

So,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  You make us glad.”

Love,
Margaret
