Only a Few Things  Are Necessary

We all relish  the good part  of something,  whether it be the good part  of a book,  a meal,  a job,  or a trip.     What we consider  the good part  is the part  that is most beneficial  and most enjoyable.     It will satisfy  our desires.

Mary felt  the same way  when Jesus came  to visit  her house  in Luke 10:38-42.     The good part,  the most satisfying part  of having Jesus over  was to just sit  at His feet  and really listen  to Him.     Mary was oblivious  to everything else.     She just wanted  to listen  and learn  —  to soak in  all the wonders  of God’s ways  with His people.

Mary’s sister,  Martha,  truly loved Jesus, too.     But,  she wanted  to show  her love  with all the busyness  of preparing a meal  and being a good hostess.     Martha was  sweating it out  in the kitchen  all by herself  and ever so worried  that things wouldn’t be “just right”.     It takes a lot  of effort  to be the perfect hostess  at a time  like this  —  after all,  Jesus was  the most important guest.     In all her hard work,  Martha’s initial desire  to lovingly serve  turned into nothing but  an irritation  and a pity party  because she felt  not enough  was being done.

And,  in all her anxiety  and busyness,  Martha  was ignoring Jesus.     Here was Jesus,  right in her house,  and she was not listening  to a word  He said.

We are often  like that.     We are so busy,  busy,  busy  taking care  of all the so-called  necessary things  in life,  which are really nothing  but busy work.     And  in the process,  day after day  we ignore Jesus  and His desire  to visit  with us  —  after all,  we have  “important”  things  to do.     But,  the bottom line is  that nothing is more important  than learning  from Jesus.

And,  Jesus said so  when Martha came  to Him  complaining  that Mary  was not helping her.     Jesus answered  in Luke 10:41-42,

Martha,  Martha,  you are so worried  and bothered  about so many things;  but only a few things  are necessaryreally  only one,  for Mary  has chosen  the good part,  which shall not be taken away  from her.

Have you chosen  “the good part”  today?     Go for “the good part”  and it will  “not be taken away”  from you.     It is the one thing  that is  “really”  “necessary”.

As we quietly enjoy  and listen  to our Lord,  by reading His word  to us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  Your love  and grace  for Your people  have been so true  and faithful  since the beginning  of time.     Let us abide  in Your love  now  and forever.”

Love,
Margaret
