You Have Rescued My Soul from Death

You Have  Rescued My Soul  from Death

We have only one life to live on this earth.     But,  much more important,  we have a soul  that lives through eternity — either in heaven  or hell.     Obviously,  what happens  to our soul  needs to be  of much greater concern  than anything that happens  to our physical body  or property.

That is why  the psalmist,  in Psalm 116:7-11,  was obliged  to sing,

Return to your rest,  O my soul,
For the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.
For You have  rescued my soul  from death,
My eyes  from tears,
My feet  from stumbling.
I shall walk  before the LORD
In the land  of the living.
I believed  when I said,
“I am greatly  afflicted.”
I said  in my alarm,
“All men  are liars.”

This psalmist  had just faced  all sorts  of liars,  who were misleading him  in such ways  that he was actually about  to lose  his soul  for all eternity.     He was headed  for hell  and he suddenly realized it.     Such an awful realization  frightened him,  as it well should have.     He was totally helpless   before those who were determined  to take him away  from the LORD  by hook  or by crook.

When God rescued him  from the web  of lies  that he was getting sucked into,  he realized  that he was actually rescued  from eternal death,  i.e.  eternity  in hell.     He had almost been stuck   on the path  of no return.     Had God not rescued him,  he would have been crying agonizing tears  of regret  as he stumbled away  from the LORD.

But,  now that God opened his eyes  to see his hell-bound path,   he was ever so glad  to have the opportunity to “walk before the LORD  in the land  of the living”  once again.     What a relief!     Saved from an eternity in hell…

As he thought about all the peer pressures  and deceitfulness  that he had been enduring,  he had to cry out,  “I am greatly afflicted.”      And,  when he realized  how deceitful these people were   in trying  to destroy the truth  about God,  he was so alarmed  and horrified,  he had to say,  “All men are liars.”      Who could be trusted  if these so-called  “friends” of his  actually had an agenda  that would rob him  of truth  and eternal life?

But,  now that he realized  the truth  of all these earthly matters  and returned  to the truth,  he could finally breath  a sigh of relief,  and say,   “Return to your rest,  O my soul,  for the LORD  has dealt bountifully  with you.”      It was God  who was lovingly looking  for his return  all that time.     It was the LORD God Almighty  who cared so much for him  that He sent messages  of warning  that finally enabled this psalmist  to realize the absolute importance of living  in God’s word  at all times.

God does the same  for all of us today.     When we stray  from our heavenly Father’s truths  and salvation,  we get these little taps  on the shoulder,  telling us  we need  to stick strongly  to the truth  and get away  from every one  who is trying  to convince us  that the LORD God  is no different  from any philosopher  or other religion.     Their lies  will invent  all sorts of  pretentious intellectualisms  that are dangerous  and confusing.      They are dangerous  and confusing  because they have nothing  to do  with the truth.     All lies  are confusing  because of their untruthfulness.

Let us return  to our Creator  and Savior,  who has proven His love  and truthfulness  since the beginning of time.     Then,  we will be able  to sing  with the psalmist,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  You have rescued my soul from eternal death.     Thank you  ever so much  for loving me so faithfully  and giving me  the peace  of Your presence.”

Love,
Margaret
