All These Evil Things

All  These Evil Things

People have all sorts  of sneaky,  underhanded reasonings  for justifying their own behavior  —  but pointing  an accusing finger  at others.     The Pharisees and scribes  in Jesus’ day  give an example of this.     They were upset  when Jesus’ disciples ate  with unwashed hands.     In Mark 7,  Jesus then taught  how unwashed hands  do not defile a person,  because food goes  into the stomach  and is eliminated.     Food does not change  what is in a person’s heart  and mind.

Then Jesus further explained  in Mark 7:20-23,

That which proceeds out  of the man,  that is what defiles the man.     For from within,  out of the heart  of men,  proceed  the evil thoughts,  fornications,  thefts,  murders,  adulteries,  deeds of coveting  and wickedness,  as well as deceit,  sensuality,  envy,  slander,  pride  and foolishness.     All these evil things proceed  from within  and defile  the man.

Every evil thing  we do  comes out  of our heart.     “Evil thoughts”  of every sort “defile the man”.     Jesus gave a long list  of evils,  including “pride  and foolishness”,  which many do not look upon  as sinful,  but are  what leads us  into unbelief  and sinful actions.     The bottom line is  that every one of us  needs to keep a careful watch  over our thoughts  and what is going on  in our hearts.

Obeying the outward traditions  of washing hands  and eating only certain foods  can never give us  clean hearts  and minds  that live each day  in faith,  hope,  and love.

If we want  to really live according  to God’s word  and serve Him rightly,  Jesus tells us  in John 6:29,

This is the work  of God,  that you believe  in Him  whom He has sent.

Our honest faith  will guide our hearts  and actions.     Then we can say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for leading us  in Your truths.”

A Christian devotional  to glorify  the LORD of lords  and GOD of gods.
