Bad Company Corrupts

This is a puzzling world  with actually conflicting laws  and standards.     Parents are obliged  to care  and provide  for their children.     But,  when they do,  they can be looked down upon,  if they are considered  to be possibly  taking away  the Constitutional rights  of their children.     What am I concerned about?

Some school libraries  have a number of “award winning books”  that are very sexually explicit  and boldly promoting  of the acceptance  of immorality  of various sorts.     These sexually explicit books  are often deemed appropriate  for children  of a very young,  elementary age  and reading level.    When a parent is upset  seeing their young children  having access  to such inappropriate books,  they are disdained  and looked down upon  as radicals,  who deny their children  the “freedom of the press“.

1 Corinthians 15:33 says,

Do not be deceived:   “Bad company  corrupts  good morals.”

Paul is telling us  that any sort of  “bad company”  will corrupt  “good morals”.     That includes bad,  immoral books  and media  of every sort.    Parents can do their utmost  to raise their children  according to God’s word,  but when an impressionable,  young child  is inundated  with immoral standards  in their schools,  they will most likely  take on immoral standards  —  or be  more accepting  of them.

It is not wise  to protect immorality.     But,  it is wise  to protect our children  from immorality.     That retains  the moral basis  of our Constitution  and the freedoms  of our democracy.

The First Amendment protects religion,  speech,  the press, and right  to peaceably assemble.     The Ninth Amendment protects us  from those  who wish  to misconstrue,  deny,  or disparage  anyone else’s  Constitutional rights.     With that said,  Christian parents  have a right  to protect their young children   from sexually explicit books  and classroom activities  that promote promiscuous immorality.

This is all related to  2 Peter 2:18-19,

For speaking out arrogant words  of vanity  they entice  by fleshly desires,  by sensuality,  those who barely escape  from the ones  who live  in error,  promising them freedom  while they themselves  are slaves  of corruption;  for  by what a man is overcome,  by this he is enslaved.

We should not want  our children  to be “overcome”  and “enslaved”  by any sort of  “fleshly desires”“sensuality”,  or “corruption”.     We are to be their loving guardians.

Looking to our Savior,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  lead us through this world.”

Love,
Margaret
