By This  He Is Enslaved

People tend  to enslave themselves.     They enslave themselves to getting rich,  lying,  cheating,  sexual desires,  the rules and lies  of a cult,  hate,  the fears of superstitions,  drugs,  religious rituals,  man-made religious laws  —  you name it.     Even Christians  can get suckered into  enslaving themselves  to these sins  —  just because they allow  some false preacher  or teacher  to influence them .

The Apostle Peter  had to warn Christians  about the danger  of letting themselves  become “enslaved”  again  to the evils  of this world.     Peter wrote  in 2 Peter 2:18-21,

For speaking out  arrogant words  of vanity  they entice  by fleshly desires,  by sensuality,  those who barely escape  from the ones  who live  in error,  promising them freedom  while they themselves  are slaves  of corruption;  for by what a man  is overcome,  by this he is enslaved.     For if,  after they have escaped  the defilements  of the world  by the knowledge  of the Lord and Savior  Jesus Christ,  they are again entangled  in them  and are overcome,  the last state  has become worse  for them  than the first.     For  it would be better  for them  not to have known  the way  of righteousness,  than having known it,  to turn away  from the holy commandment  handed on  to them.

Peter pointed out  that we escape  “the defilements  of the world  by the knowledge  of the Lord and Savior  Jesus Christ”.    We come  to a saving faith by learning  about Jesus  and trusting  only His word  in the Bible  for our salvation.     We need  to escape  “the defilements  of this world”  because they rob us  of salvation.

So,  we are ruining ourselves  when we stop caring  about God’s eternal word  in the Bible  —  and go back  to worldly corruptions  of false preachers.     Our own words  and actions will condemn us.     We should not  “turn away  from the holy commandment”  —  the eternal word  of God’s salvation  through faith  in Christ  alone.

Glad  that God has kept  His word  safe  for us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for setting us free  from slavery  to this world  by giving us Your eternal word.”

Love,
Margaret
