Even Though  the Needy One Speaks  What Is Right

Good people  are often slandered  for all sorts  of reasons.     There might be jealousy,  hatred for that person’s faith  in God,  greed,  or even a despising  of one’s physical characteristics.     So,  the slanderer  will make  all sorts of nasty remarks,  spread lies,  and defame the good person  in every conceivable way  to gain the advantage and power  he wants.

In describing  this evil,  Isaiah 32:7  says,

As for a rogue,  his weapons  are evil;
He devises  wicked schemes
To destroy  the afflicted  with slander,
Even though  the needy one  speaks  what is right.

The slanderer  does not care  that the one  he is lying about  is humble,  poor,  and afflicted.     Instead,  he wants  to take advantage  of  “the needy one”  just to fulfill  his desires  and greeds.

Jesus was often slandered  by the unbelieving Pharisees  and Sadducees.     They told the people  that Jesus was a fraud;  that He worked through Beelzebub,  the prince of devils;  that He was a liar  and a blasphemer.     They even mocked  and slandered Jesus  as He hung  on the cross.     Considering all the good Jesus did  in healing people,  and the truth He spoke  when preaching,  their slander  was cruel beyond words.

They probably felt justified  in their “slander”  because they were self-righteous and could not accept the truth  of being sinners  in need  of repentance.     They did not want anyone  in their community  to realize they were sinners.

That brings us  to ourselves.     Do we slander others  when we want  to protect  our self-image  by hiding our sins  —  and putting down anyone who makes us feel guilty?     Everyone needs  to look to Jesus  for the forgiveness  of their sins  —  and then,  live their lives with the same kind  of love  that Jesus has shown us.

Redeemed and forgiven,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  guide us  in living  to Your glory.”

Love,
Margaret
