We Urge You  Not to Receive  the Grace  of God  in Vain

We can  so easily  mess up our whole lives  by not considering  what God’s word teaches us.     We can actually “know”  what God’s word says,  but make excuses  for wrongly thinking  our worldly desires  do somehow  meet God’s approval.

This is part  of what Paul  was talking about  in 2 Corinthians 6.     As a preacher,  who suffered  so very much  in bringing  the gospel  to people,  Paul  did not want  the Corinthians  to foolishly imagine  that they would have a future chance  to obey God  —  but,  be able  to do their own thing  first.     So,  Paul wrote  in 2 Corinthians 6:1-2,

And  working together  with Him,  we also  urge you  not to receive  the grace  of God  in vain  —  for He says,

“At the acceptable time  I listened  to you,
And on the day  of salvation  I helped you.”

Behold,  now is  “the acceptable time,”  behold,  now is “the day  of salvation” —

Many “receive  the grace  of God  in vain”  by believing the gospel,  but then immediately,  belligerently disobeying  the gospel  by living according to  their worldly desires.     They want to do  what they want  to do  —  instead of humbly following God’s word.     Such disobedience brings God’s discipline  in the form  of troubles.

God had  “listened”  to us  when we looked for a Savior  —  and  “on the day  of salvation”  He helped us  to realize  that Jesus  is  our Savior  for all eternity.     That is grace at “the acceptable time”.     We have received  that  “grace  of God”  by believing  —  but,  let us not have received it  “in vain”  by nonchalantly living  according to  our old worldly ways  and reasonings.

We need  to see  and respect  the holy love  and wisdom  of God’s ways  for our lives.     Now is  ‘the acceptable time'”.

Ever so thankful  for God’s faithful  and patient love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for dealing  with us  as a dear Father deals  with His dear children.”

Love,
Margaret
