What Does It Profit a Man

What Does It  Profit a Man?

We like having  a good job  with great returns  (money)  for our efforts  and time.     That means we’ll have plenty  to put away  in savings  for our retirement years.     Some people  have a very strong desire  to keep earning  more and more.     After earning  their first million,  they set higher  and higher goals for themselves.     Multi-millions do not satisfy them.

Everybody knows  that our lives  are relatively short  and that no one  is able  to take any  of their riches  with them  when they die.     Poof!     All that work,  worry,  and effort  can’t do them a bit  of good.     We have a lesson  to learn here.     If money  and the lush comforts  of life  are not worth striving after,  what is?

The only thing  that is enjoyable  after this life  is eternal life  in heaven.     That takes faith,  trusting in Jesus,  and lovingly living according  to His word.     Jesus teaches  how to live a worthwhile life  in Mark 8:34-37,

If anyone wishes  to come after Me,  he must deny himself,  and take up his cross  and follow Me.     For whoever wishes  to save his life  will lose it,  but whoever loses his life  for My sake  and the gospel’s  will save it.     For what does it profit  a man  to gain  the whole world,  and forfeit  his soul?     For what will a man give  in exchange  for his soul?

A life spent  in faith,  hope,  and love  for our Savior is what will save us eternally  — and be the greatest “profit”  anyone can possibly imagine.     That is the only way  we won’t  “forfeit”  our  “soul” for all eternity.     Whatever cross we need  to bear  in this life,  we need to do it humbly  and gladly  as we “follow” Jesus’ teachings.

It’s just not worth it  to choose worldly things  for this short lifetime,  “in exchange  for his soul”  for all eternity.

So glad  for God’s love and salvation,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for being our greatest treasure.”

Love,
Margaret
