That  He Might  Make You Understand

We people  can be mighty dense  quite a bit  of the time.     Every time  there’s a problem  too big  for us  to overcome,  we lose faith  and begin  to complain.     That was also true  for the Israelites  after God rescued them   from slavery  in Egypt.     God promised  to care for them,  but every time they had a need,  they lost faith  and complained  against God.

So,  Moses reminded  the Israelites  of God’s ways  with them  during their travels  through the desert.     Moses taught  in Deuteronomy 8:3,

He humbled you  and let you be hungry,  and fed you  with manna  which you did not know,  nor did your fathers know,  that  He might make you understand  that man does not live  by bread alone,  but man lives  by everything  that proceeds out  of the mouth  of the LORD.

No one can live  just with the food we eat  every day.     If we imagine we’re really  living it up  with all our worldly stuff,  food,  and riches,  we don’t have a clue  about real life.     Psalm 49:20 reveals,

Man  in his pomp,  yet without understanding,
Is like the beasts  that perish.

Without rightly “understanding”  that our souls  will face  eternal judgment,  and that we are responsible  for knowing  that we must depend  on the LORD  for all our needs,  we are putting our souls  in jeopardy  of eternal damnation.     We must be careful  that our lowly lives don’t become pompous.     We might feel smart  and sophisticated  —  but we’re nothing  without faith  in the LORD.     Everyone  needs  to take  to heart  Psalm 111:10,

The fear  of the LORD  is the beginning  of wisdom;
A good understanding  have all those  who do His commandments;
His praise endures forever.

Smart is as smart does.     Let us rightly praise  and thank  the LORD  for all He does  in faithfully caring  for us.

Glad for God’s faithful mercy,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for humbly caring  for us.”

Love,
Margaret
