Your Hands  Made Me  and Fashioned Me

Every one  of us  is different  in ever so many ways.     We don’t even know all  that makes us different.     And yet,  Psalm 119:73  points out a way  in which we are the same.

Your hands  made me  and fashioned me;
Give me understanding,  that I may  learn Your commandments.

God Almighty  has  “made”  us  and “fashioned”  us.     We have not made ourselves  —  in spite of  the fact  that people might comment,  “He’s a self-made man”.     We cannot  make ourselves  a success.     God does that.     We might imagine  that all our hard work  has made us successful,  but the truth is  that no one is successful  without God allowing it.

Some people work very hard  all their lives  with little  or no apparent success  —  in terms  of worldly success.     And yet,  there is a success  in life  that is often hidden  or disregarded.     This success  is better  than all the riches  and accolades  in the world.     It is God’s sure answer  to our prayer,  “Give me understanding,  that I may learn  Your commandments”.

The psalmist is praying  for the  “understanding”  that will make him  wise enough  to really appreciate  God’s ways  and wisdom  for living.     No matter how God has “made” us  and “fashioned” our being  through ethnicity,  physical features  and abilities,  or any other influences,  as sinners,  we all need  a heart’s  “understanding”  that willingly trusts  in the love  and authority  of the Lord our Savior.

We all need  God’s guidance  in right living  and a heart  that gladly obeys  what is good  and in accordance  with God’s saving love.

Thankful  for our Redeemer’s  love  and provision,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You for giving us  what we really need.”

Love,
Margaret
