The City  Whose Architect  and Builder  Is God

Hebrews 11  gives us a long list  of God’s children  who lived  by faith.     One hero mentioned  is Abraham.     By faith,  Abraham obeyed God’s call  to leave his home  and go  to an unknown place,  where he would be given  an inheritance.     So,  he went  to live  in a foreign land,  trusting God’s promise.     Sure,  he lived his whole life  in tents,  but Hebrews 11:10 tells us,

…he was looking  for the city  which has foundations,  whose architect  and builder  is God.

In his lifetime,  Abraham never received  a bunch  of earthly land  that he could call his own country.     And yet,  he trusted  that God was keeping  His promise  in the way  that was best.     Owning earthly land  was not Abraham’s goal.     Much rather,  Abraham wanted  to live  with God,  in His house,  in the city  which has  foundations,   whose architect  and builder  is God.

Abraham wanted  to be God’s obedient child  in love and faithfulness  —  and always live  with God.     He understood  a spiritual truth  that is expressed in Psalm 89:14,

Righteousness  and justice  are the foundation  of Your throne;
Lovingkindness  and truth  go before You.

All  of God’s gifts  to us  —  “righteousness“,  “justice“,  “lovingkindness“,  “truth“,  mercy,  salvation,  and so much more  —  are what God’s “foundation”  of authority  are built on.     No earthly chunk  of land  is worth  anything near  to what God’s  “foundation”  is worth.     So,  Abraham  was righteous  in his faith  in God.

We, too,  need  to look  for  “the city  which has foundations,  whose architect  and builder  is God.     We need  to look  for our eternal home  in heaven.     The “foundations”  of God’s city  are strong  and eternal.     The stuff  in this world  will all  pass away.

Humbly  and gladly  living by faith,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for showing us  what is worth living for.”

Love,
Margaret
