There  You Will Remember  Your Ways

God is so gracious  —  far beyond  our imagination.     Ezekiel gives us  an example  of God’s grace.     The Israelites  had sinned horribly  in many ways besides their idolatry.     As a discipline,  God had them conquered  and exiled  to Babylon.     Their exile was terrible,  but they had God’s promise  to someday  return them  to the land  of Israel.     In that promise,  God said  in Ezekiel 20:41-44,

And you will know  that I am the LORD,  when I bring you  into the land  of Israel,  into the land  which I swore  to give  to your forefathers.     There  you will remember  your ways  and all your deeds  with which  you have defiled yourselves;  and you will loathe  yourselves  in your own sight  for all the evil things  that you have done.     Then you will know  that I am the LORD  when I have dealt  with you  for My name’s sake,  not according  to your evil ways  or according to  your corrupt deeds,  O house  of Israel.

When we are satisfied  with our sinfulness,  we ignore God  and His word  to us  —  and live according to our evil desires.     But,  when God disciplines us,  we have second thoughts,  fearfully  remembering  God has authority  to save us  or  condemn us eternally.     Then we feel a need  to straighten out.

God told Israel  that when He returned them  to their homeland,  each one would  “remember your ways”  and how they had  “defiled”  themselves.     They would even  “loathe” themselves  “for all the evil things”  they had done.

It’s better  to “loathe”  our sins  before Judgment Day,  when it’ll be too late.     The sooner  we repent,  the sooner  we will realize God’s forgiveness  for His  “name’s sake”.     Upon repentance  and forgiveness,  God will not deal with us  according to our  “corrupt deeds”.     Rather,  He will graciously  wash our sins away  for Jesus’ name’s sake.

Ever glad  for God’s grace,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  let us never forget Your grace  in Christ Jesus.”

Love,
Margaret
