The Word  They Heard  Did Not  Profit Them

When God freed  the Israelites  from slavery  in Egypt,  and they started heading  for the Promised Land,  they were glad  —  for awhile.     Moses had told them God’s promises  and they wondrously witnessed  the many miracles  God performed  —  and that was fine  for awhile.     But, it didn’t take long  for complaints  to start spreading  throughout their camp.     They were tired of the food  they were getting.     There were times  they were out of water  in the desert  —  and that was upsetting,  causing them to complain some more.

Through it all,  God miraculously supplied their needs,  but they weren’t satisfied  and grumbled.     Moses kept preaching  God’s word  and promises  to them,  but their hearts  and minds  doubted it all.

People today  aren’t any different.     We have God’s word  in the Bible  giving us  the age-old prophecies  of a Savior  and showing us  how God miraculously fulfilled  all those promises  in Christ Jesus.     But,  many doubt  and are not satisfied.     So,  Hebrews 4:1-3 says,

Therefore,  let us fear  if,  while a promise remains  of entering  His rest,  any one  of you  may seem  to have come short  of it.     For indeed  we have had  good news  preached to us,  just as they also;  but  the word  they heard  did not  profit them,  because  it was not united  by faith  in those  who heard.     For we  who  have believed  enter that rest…

Those who believe  God’s word  are blessed by it  as it strengthens them  through all  of life’s challenges  and they learn  to live  by faith.     But,  God’s word does  “not profit”  those  who refuse  to be  “united by faith”  to God’s promises  and so  “enter that rest”  —  that is the peace  God gives our hearts here  on earth,  and the promise  of an eternal home  in heaven.

Profiting  by faith  in God’s word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for the blessings  of Your word  in our hearts.”

Love,
Margaret
