The One  Who Overcomes  the World

There are those  who want  to conquer  the whole world  and rule over everyone.     Their idea  of leading  is to be a dictator  of some sort.     The Bible talks about  “the one  who overcomes  the world”  —  and that overcomer can be you  and me.     The powerful  in the world  would mock  and laugh themselves silly  over such a thought.     But,  it’s true,  and God’s word  stands forever true.

1 John 5:5  says,

Who is  the one  who overcomes  the world,  but he who believes  that Jesus is  the Son  of God?

People who relish the idea of ruling  over others  are only thinking  in greedy,  worldly terms.     They love power over others  and riches.     But they will all surely die  —  and then what?     They will end up  with an eternity  in hell,  with no power  or riches.     What a waste  of life.

When a Christian actually  “overcomes  the world”,  he is letting God Almighty rule  in his heart  so that he willingly learns  to live by faith  —  looking forward  to his promised home  in heaven.     Having worldly riches is  not important  to him,  because he is trusting  in God’s care.     Trusting God,  he has no desire  to rule over others,  but is happy  to help others.

But,  what has he  “overcome”?     By “believing”  in Jesus,  he is accepting the forgiveness  of all his sins.     Realizing  the eternal blessing  of being forgiven,  he dearly loves the Lord Jesus.     This love  for Jesus  makes him want  to imitate Jesus’ love.     That leads him  to desire all  that is God pleasing  and loving.     Loving  to imitate  and please the LORD  totally erases  a worldly greed  for riches  and power.

So,  believing in Jesus  leads Christians  to be  “the one  who overcomes  the world”.     Christians  “overcome”  the power  of sin  in their lives  —  and it’s all because Jesus is living  in our hearts.     We won’t be perfect  in the world’s eyes  —  but,  God sees us as perfect  through faith.

So,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for saving us!”

Love,
Margaret
