There Is No One  Like You  Among the gods,  O Lord

Because there are differences  between various cultures,  their customs,  and their languages,  some things can puzzle  a different culture.     That is sometimes the case  when another culture  is studying the Bible,  which is  of a Jewish culture.     It is vital  to not have any misunderstandings  or misinterpretations.     We want  to pay attention  to what God Almighty actually said  in His eternal word.

One biblical term  that is often misunderstood  is in Psalm 86:8,

There is no one  like You  among the gods,  O Lord,
Nor are there any works  like Yours.

One might think,  “‘gods’,  are there other ‘gods’  I need  to know about?”      The quick answer is, “No.     There are no other  real gods  with any sort  of power.”     There are idols  and myths galore  for every culture  and religion   —  but there is only  one  real God  over absolutely  all things  —  without exception.

The Jews wanted  to show their reverence  for the one true God  by not using His holy name  too often  or irreverently.     They did this  by using many names  that show  the many aspects  of the one true God.     The LORD is our godjudge,  ruler,   and is mighty  —  so, they called Him elohiym,  which says that  in Hebrew.     In English  that is translated “Lord”.

If they wanted  to refer  to the self-existing One,  the one true God,  they said “Jehovah”  — translated in English,  “LORD”.

If they wanted  to be careful  to not use  that name  too often,  they said,  “Adonay”,  which is translated,  “Lord”,  to emphasize  their submissiveness  and reverence.

There are many other references  to the LORD  in the Bible  that do not say  His name,  Jehovah,  and we need  to be aware  of that  as we study God’s word.     All  of God’s names  describe His power,  love,  and care for us.

Comforted  by God’s  many almighty aspects,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for Your almighty love.”

Love,
Margaret
