A People  Who Err  In Their Heart

In this world  we see people  who love the LORD  and believe  in His word  —  and we see those  who do not love  or believe  in the LORD.     It has always been that way.     When we read  the Old Testament account  of the Israelites  traveling through the desert,  some trusted God  and others didn’t.     Those who didn’t  trust God  were always complaining  and accusing God  of not taking care  of them properly.     Because of all their unjust complaints,  God says  in Psalm 95:10-11,

For forty years  I loathed  that generation,
And said  they are a people  who err  in their heart,
And they do not know  My ways.
Therefore  I swore  in My anger,
Truly  they shall not enter  into My rest.

That “rest”  was  to receive  the blessings  of the fertile Promised Land.     All the complainers died  over those “forty years”  in the desert  because God saw  that  “they do not know My ways”.     God’s ways  are the ways  of faith,  hope,  and love.     God’s ways  include various testings  that teach  and strengthen us  in the true faith,  hope,  and love.     If we refuse  to accept God’s  “ways”  ( testings )  with us,  we’ll never receive the blessed “rest”  of heaven  found through faith,  hope,  and love.

King David knew that  very well.     So,  when he sinned terribly,  he repented  and prayed  in Psalm 51:10,

Create  in me  a clean heart,  O God,
And renew  a steadfast spirit  within me.

We all need  God’s help  in learning  to “know”  His  “ways”  and trust  His testings  for us.     God will most gladly  “create”  “a clean heart”  within us,  and help us  to have  “a steadfast spirit”  within us.     He was faithful  in sustaining David,  and has promised  to be faithful  in sustaining us, too.

As we learn  to “know” these “ways”  of God,  we can  “rest”  in His grace  and say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for teaching us  Your ways.”

Love,
Margaret
