Everything  That Proceeds Out  of the Mouth  of the LORD

Yat,  yat,   yat, yat  —  yat, yat, yat.      That’s how many people feel  about listening  to God’s word.     In the meantime,  they had tuned out  ages ago,  and have not  the foggiest clue  about what God’s word teaches us.     That’s sad,  but it’s a part  of life   —  and has been  since the beginning of time.

But,  it is interesting  to note  how when Jesus had fasted  40 days  in the wilderness,  the devil  then tempted Him  to turn a stone  into bread.     Jesus replied  in Luke 4:4,

It is written,  “Man shall not live  on bread alone.”

Jesus was quoting Deuteronomy 8:3  when Moses told the Israelites  about God’s ways,  saying about God,

He humbled you  and let you be hungry,  and fed you  with manna  which you did not know,  nor did your fathers know,  that He might make you  understand  that man does not live  by bread alone,  but man lives  by everything  that proceeds  out of the mouth  of the LORD.

Those Israelites  had just spent 40 years  in the wilderness  learning  to trust  in the LORD.     And,  they still didn’t have things straight  in their minds.     Aren’t we much the same?

We can have trial  after trial  —  blessing  after blessing  —  lesson  after lesson  —  and we’re still puzzled  when it comes to  the next trial,  blessing,  lesson.     It’s so hard  for our sinful natures  to grasp  God’s eternal,  faithful love.     Surely,  we need food,  clothing,  and shelter,  in order  to physically live  in this world.

But,  in the same breath  we definitely need  “everything  that proceeds  out of the mouth  of the LORD”.     We need  to know  who the true God is  —  and we most surely need  to know  that there is  a blessed eternal life  through faith  in Christ Jesus.

Picturing Deuteronomy 8:3  and Luke 4:4 together,  we see  how vital it is  to honestly listen  to every word  of God  in the Bible.     Our eternal life depends on it.

In awesome respect,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  You are  the Way,  the Truth,  and the Life.”

Love,
Margaret
