Those Are  the Things  That Defile

The Jews have many laws  about their daily lives.     Most all  of their laws  were made up  by their teachers  and are not a part  of the Old Testament.     There are laws about washing their hands,  washing dishes,  eating,  and just about every activity.     Since their laws were a very important part  of their lives,  they were concerned  with anyone who did not follow their laws.

The Pharisees  of Jesus’ day  criticized the fact  that His disciples  did not wash their hands  before eating.     But,  Jesus showed them  their hypocrisy  in disregarding God’s word,  in order to keep  their man-made laws.     Then Jesus quoted Isaiah,  saying in Mark 7:6-7,

‘This people honors me  with their lips,
But their heart  is far away  from Me.
But  in vain do they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines  the precepts  of men.’

Then Jesus pointed out in verse 8,

Neglecting the commandment  of God,  you hold  to the tradition  of men.

The Pharisees  made up laws  about washing hands  and eating,  in an effort  to keep the inside  of their bodies  absolutely pure  in their imagination.     All their man-made laws  were a great  and most unnecessary burden  to the people.     They were not honoring God  with all their rules.

We honor God  by living according to His actual word  in the Bible,  according to the gospel  that emphasizes living by faith  in Christ Jesus.     Man-made  “precepts”  and  “tradition”  are not God’s word.

There are churches today  that have rules  about eating.     But,  Jesus teaches us  in Mark 7:15,

There is nothing  that enters a man  from the outside  which can defile him;  but the things  which come out  of him,  those are the things  that defile  a man.

What we eat  does not make anyone unclean  in God’s eyes.     But,  the garbage  and false doctrines  in our hearts  and minds  grossly “defile” us.     Let us “honor”  and “worship”  God with a pure  “heart”.

Loving God’s word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for leading us  in Your word  that we may rightly honor You.”

Love,
Margaret
