The Surpassing Value  of Knowing  Christ Jesus

As we look at the world today,  there are few  who seem to know  “the surpassing value  of knowing Christ Jesus”.     Many just “don’t have time”  for Jesus.     Others despise Jesus  as they use His name  as a curse word.     Still others feel Jesus was a fraud  —  and the opinions  just keep getting more muddled  from there.

The apostle Paul actually hated Jesus  and His followers.     As a self-righteous Pharisee,  Paul was sure  everyone had to work their way  to heaven  by obeying  all the rules set down  by the Jewish leaders.     Paul sincerely believed that  until Christ appeared  to him  and taught him  from God’s word  —  proving  that Jesus was  the long-promised Savior.

A very repentant Paul  had his whole life changed around  as he became  an ardent preacher  of Christ our Savior.     As Paul  willingly suffered  for his Christian faith,  he wrote in Philippians 3:7-8,

But  whatever things were gain  to me,  those things  I have counted  as loss  for the sake  of Christ.     More than that,  I count all things  to be loss  in view  of the surpassing value  of knowing Christ Jesus  my Lord,  for whom  I have suffered the loss  of all things,  and count them  but rubbish  so that I may gain Christ…

Paul came to realize  that all the things  in this world are worthless.     We can’t take anything  to heaven,  whether it be riches,  a good reputation,  success,  health,  power,  authority,  or anything else  we value here.

In other words,  if we don’t have Christ Jesus  in our hearts,  we have absolutely nothing  —  nada  —  zilch.     So, what’s the sense  in spending our lives  gathering things  that are worthless  in the end?     If we want a real joy  and happiness,  we need  to know Christ Jesus  as our Savior.

Because Jesus loves us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Create in us clean hearts  and a right spirit,  so we may serve You rightly.”

Love,
Margaret
