For Human Help  Is Worthless

Throughout Old Testament history,  God would show  His judgment  against Israel,  and cause them  to lose battles,  have their cities destroyed,  allow the enemy  to ransack the Temple,  and even  for the Israelites  to be taken  into captivity.     Whatever punishment was given,  the Israelites were helpless  and saw  that  “human help  is worthless”.   ( Psalm 60:11 )   What was God so angry about  to allow all that?     The Old Testament records many reasons.

Most often  it was the disobedience  of the people.     For that reason,  God’s people  always need  to highly respect  God’s word.     The sins  of the Israelites  included  idolatry,  and following heathen customs  and traditions,   along with disobeying God’s direct commandments  for godly living.

When King David  was deeply concerned  about the possible outcome  of a particular battle,  he fervently prayed.     He asked God  to save them  and restore Israel  to what it should be  as a nation belonging  to God.     David prayed  in Psalm 60:11-12,

Give us aid  against the enemy,
for human help  is worthless.

With God  we will gain  the victory,
and He will trample down  our enemies.

When David prayed  for restoration,  he wanted all Israel  to be living  according to God’s will.     When the people  disregard God’s ways,  and God needs  to straighten them out,  no amount  of  “human help” can help.     Rather,  “human help  is worthless”.

We all need God’s help  to “gain the victory”  we need  for our country,  also.     But,  the only way  to get God’s help  is to humbly live  in faith,  hope,  and love  —  the right kind  of faith,  that is  in the true God only  —  the right kind  of hope,  that looks  to the LORD’s promises only  —  and the right kind  of love,  that puts  God’s will first  in all things.

As we pray  for our country  and depend  on the LORD’s guiding word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  create in us  clean hearts and right spirits,  that our country may be blessed  to Your glory.”

Love,
Margaret
