Clouds  and Thick Darkness  Surround Him

The LORD God Almighty  is unknowable  to us sinful  human beings.     We hear about Him  and see the results  of His almighty creative power  —  His awesome power  to fulfill  His prophecies  of a Savior  —  and His power  to save us  in our various predicaments  —  but  we have to  bow down  our hearts  in humble awe,  because  we still  don’t really know  all that God is.

For this reason,  Psalm 97:1-2  says,

The LORD reigns,  let the earth  rejoice;
Let the many islands  be glad.

Clouds  and thick darkness  surround Him;
Righteousness  and justice  are the foundation  of His throne.

The psalmist  describes God  as being surrounded by  “clouds  and thick darkness”.     We need  to realize  how very deeply  we are  in a spiritual  “darkness”  because of our sinful natures.     Our sins keep us  from knowing God  in all His holiness  and glory.     We know  what it is like  to be  in a physical  “darkness”  where we can’t see anything  —  so that is a comparison  we can make  of our situation.

Only God’s word  and working  in our hearts  can make us get a glimpse  of the light  of God’s holiness,  love,  and the salvation  we so desperately need.     In God’s word,  we see some instances  where His prophets  were enabled  to see  a vision  of His glory  —  and how they reacted  to those visions.

Ezekiel  had several visions.     In Ezekiel 1:28,  he writes,

As the appearance  of the rainbow  in the clouds  on a rainy day,  so was the appearance  of the surrounding radiance.     Such was the appearance  of the likeness  of the glory  of the LORD.     And when I saw it,  I fell  on my face  and heard a voice speaking.

The prophet Daniel also fell  on his face  upon seeing a vision  ( Daniel 8:17 )  —  Jesus’ disciples  fell on their faces  when they saw Jesus transfigured  ( Matthew 17:6 )  —  and the Apostle John  in Revelation 1:17.

We,  too,  need a deep reverence  as we get a glimpse  of God  in His word.     Seeing the holiness  of His love  in Christ Jesus,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     The LORD alone  is God.”

Love,
Margaret
