Do They Spite Me?

Do They Spite Me?

There are those  who purposely do mean things  in order to hurt  and go against  another person.     That’s spiteful.     People even choose  to be spiteful  towards God  by defiantly disobeying  His instructions  in the Bible.     Many  of our sins  are done in “spite”  of our knowledge  that God does not approve  of such behavior.

One blatant example  is how the Israelites  would worship idols  and take part  in heathen activities  —  in “spite”  of the fact  that they were well aware  of God’s commands against that.     God says  in Jeremiah 7:18-19,

“The children  gather wood,  and the fathers  kindle the fire,  and the women knead dough  to make cakes  for the queen  of heaven;  and they pour out  drink offerings  to other gods  in order  to spite Me.     Do they spite Me?”  declares the LORD.     “Is it not themselves  they spite,  to their own shame?”

That’s true.     Doing anything against God  cannot hurt Him.     He is almighty.     But,  spiteful actions  hurt only one’s self.     We condemn ourselves  when we purposely  and hatefully  do wrong.

We need  to consider this  in reference  to Halloween activities.     They are  of heathen origins,  honoring heathen superstitions,  lies,  and traditions.      Many Bible verses warn us  against imitating  these heathen traditions.     Even more troubling,  God says  in Jeremiah 7:9-10,

Will you steal,  murder,  and commit adultery  and swear falsely,  and offer sacrifices  to Baal  and walk after other gods  that you have not known,  then come  and stand before Me  in this housewhich  is called  by My nameand say,  ‘We are delivered!‘  —  that you may do all these abominations?

Don’t Christians do just that?   —  They honor heathen traditions  and then  go  to God’s house  declaring they are saved,  so they may do the same  “abominations”  come the next “holiday”?

Let’s not “spite”  our Creator Redeemer.

Thankful for God’s patience  and redeeming love,  so we may live  in the freedom  of His righteousness,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for leading us  in the eternal truths  of Your gracious salvation.”

Love,
Margaret
