How Sweet Are Your Words to My Taste!

How Sweet Are Your Words to My Taste!

There are those who really think  it is dumb  to read and study God’s word  —  the Bible.     God’s word  has something to say about their opinions.     First we think  of Psalm 119:103,

How sweet  are Your words  to my taste!
Yes,  sweeter than honey  to my mouth!

Obviously,  this psalmist  really loved God’s word.     He certainly did not feel  reading God’s word  was a waste  of his time.     Much rather,  he craved  and appreciated  everything God has written  for our learning.     He speaks of God being  his strength,  salvation,  comfort,  guide,  and much more.

King David also loved  God’s word.     He wrote in Psalm 34:8,

O taste  and see  that the LORD  is good;
How blessed  is the man  who takes refuge  in Him!

David often spoke  of God  being his rock  of salvation,  his help  in times of trouble,  and his righteousness.     Because he realized that,  he grounded himself  in God’s eternal word.     The blessings David knew  are also for all  who “taste  and see”  how  “good”  and faithful God is  in keeping His promises.

Jesus also taught the importance  of God’s word  in John 6:63, saying,

It is the Spirit  who gives life;  the flesh profits nothing;  the words  that I have spoken  to you  are spirit  and are life.

In spite of these “words”  from Jesus,  Jesus’ followers  were often rejected  by the Jews  when preaching.    So Paul and Barnabas told them  in Acts 13:46,

It was necessary  that the word  of God  be spoken  to you first;  since you repudiate it  and judge yourselves unworthy  of eternal life,  behold,  we are turning  to the Gentiles.

Those  who constantly despise  God’s word  are judging themselves “unworthy  of eternal life”.     Many Gentiles turned  to God back then.     But today,  many Gentiles reject God’s word.

How about us?     Are God’s words  “sweet”  to our “taste”?     Do we understand  that they give us eternal  “life”?

As we “taste  and see  that the LORD  is good”,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for giving us  Your word.”

Love,
Margaret
