By His Doing You Are in Christ Jesus

People like  to get credit  for doing all kinds  of things.     Such acknowledgement can be good  to a point  —  if it is  in truth  and honestly acknowledges God’s hand  in everything.     The apostle Paul wanted  the congregation  in Corinth  to think  about  any credit  they might desire  for coming  to the true faith  in Christ Jesus.

Paul reminded them  about how most  of them  were not amongst the rich  and famous,  the smart   or mighty.     Nevertheless,  they truly were  God’s  chosen people  —  and their faith  would “shame the wise”    ( 1 Corinthians 1:27 )  in the end.     And  even though,  they were  “despised”  in the world  ( 1 Corinthians 1:28 ),  God would use their faith  to judge all the unbelievers  in the world.     In the end,  it will be  “that no man  may boast  before God”.     ( 1 Corinthians 1:29 )

Regarding us all,  Paul says  in 1 Corinthians 1:30-31,

But  by His doing  you are  in Christ Jesus,  who became  to us wisdom  from God,  and righteousness  and sanctification,  and redemption,  so that,  just as it is written,  “LET HIM  WHO BOASTS,  BOAST IN THE LORD.”

We don’t  have smarts,  but Jesus  “became  to us wisdom  from God”.     We are sinners,  but Jesus became our “righteousness”.     We cannot live honestly holy lives,  but Jesus became our  “sanctification”.     We can’t earn  our way  into heaven,  but Jesus became  our  “redemption”  unto eternal life.

This is exactly why  we must  “boast in the LORD”  —  instead of  in our own being.     And this is why  King David wrote  in Psalm 57:2,

I will cry  to God  Most High,
To God  who accomplishes  all things  for me.

As we look  to God  and rejoice  in all He does for us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for being our wisdom,  righteousness,  sanctification,  and redemption.”

Love,
Margaret
