What Sign Do You Show Us As Your Authority?

That is a good question.     We need  to know  what allows another person  to have “authority”.     Policemen have badges  to show their given “authority”.     Parents have “authority”  over their children  —  as do teachers,  principals,  and superintendents.     Employers  have “authority”  as the owner  of a given business.

God’s word  shows us  that Christ Jesus  had “authority”  as God Almighty  come down  from heaven  to  (as a man)  be our Savior  from sin.

When Jesus saw the greed  and disrespect  of merchants  and money changers  in the temple,  He drove them all out  with a scourge  —  because God’s house  is to be a place  of worship,  not business.     That riled the Jews,  so  John 2:18-22 records,

The Jews  then said  to Him,  “What sign  do You show us  as Your authority  for doing these things?”     Jesus answered them,  “Destroy this temple,  and in three days  I will raise it up.”     The Jews then said,  “It took forty-six years  to build this temple,  and will You raise it up  in three days?”     But  He was speaking  of the temple  of His body.     So  when He was raised  from the dead,  His disciples  remembered  that He said this;  and they believed  the Scripture  and the word  which Jesus  had spoken.

Jesus’ disciples figured out  the “sign”  of Jesus’  “authority”  when He rose  “from the dead”.     The Jewish religious leaders did not figure it out,  and remained in unbelief.      At another time,  when the Jews wanted more signs,  Jesus said  in Matthew 16:4,

An evil  and adulterous generation  seeks after a sign;  and a sign  will not be given it,  except the sign  of Jonah.

Actually,  many “signs”  of fulfilled prophecies  had been already given.     There was no need  to ask for even more “signs”.     Bottom line?     When wondering  about Jesus’  “authority”,  study  the Bible  to find all the fulfilled prophecies  —  “signs”.

In wonder  of all God’s “signs”,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  all Your works  are marvelous!”

Love,
Margaret
