As Moses Lifted Up the Serpent in the Wilderness

Some circumstances  just require faith  —  as Numbers 21:4-9 shows.     The Israelites started complaining  about their trek  through the desert.     They wanted better food  and water.     For their  unjust complaints,  the LORD sent poisonous serpents  that killed many.     When they realized their sin,  the people asked Moses  to pray  for help.    The LORD had Moses make  a bronze serpent  on a pole.     All who looked  at the serpent,  believing  in God,  lived.

When preaching,  Jesus compared this instance  to the need  of people  to believe  in Him  as He would be led  to suffer and die  on the cross  to pay  for their sins.     Jesus said,  in John 3:14-16,

As Moses lifted up  the serpent  in the wilderness,  even so  must the Son  of Man  be lifted up;  so that whoever believes  will  in Him  have eternal life.     For God  so loved  the world,  that He gave His only begotten Son,  that whoever believes  in Him  shall not perish,  but have  eternal life.

Here we are  —  sometimes complaining  —  sometimes not trusting God  —  sometimes wishing life  was better.

In our complaints  —  spoken or unspoken  —  we need  to look  to Jesus  as He was  “lifted up”  on the cross  to die for our sins.     God’s love  is all around us  and we should not refuse  to see that  in an evil,  complaining way.     Rather,  we are  to go to Jesus  and give thanks  for His forgiving love.

God is caring  for us  even as we face  all sorts  of troubles  and sadness.     That care and love  should be acknowledged  with a thankful heart,  because God is allowing  our troubles  to strengthen us  in the true faith,  hope,  and love.

Humbly trusting  God’s proven love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for Your gifts  of love.”

Love,
Margaret
