How Can You?

The religious leaders  of Jesus’ day  were very sure  that they knew God’s ways  and would obtain eternal life.     But,  as much as they felt they knew the Scriptures  and were leading righteous lives,  they didn’t really believe all the testimony  in the Old Testament,  like they said they did.     The Old Testament  is filled with prophecies  about the coming  of the Savior.     Jesus’ life was a fulfillment  of many prophecies  —  but the religious leaders refused  to believe all that Jesus preached,  or match up the Old Testament prophecies  with Jesus’ life.

Jesus’ miracles of healing many,  feeding thousands,  and raising the dead  did not lead them  to believe Him.     Rather,  they liked to pat each other  on the back  and tell each other  how good they were.     That made them feel good  about their self-righteousness  —  and seemed much better  than Jesus’ message  of repentance  and faith.

In love,  Jesus confronted them  in John 5:44,  asking,

How can you believe,  when you receive glory  from one another  and you do not seek  the glory  that is from the one  and only God?

“How” indeed!     If pleasing people  and having lots  of self-righteous friends  is more important  than honestly  and humbly serving  “the one and only God”  —  then one is  not believing God  or His eternal word.

If we want  to claim  to be saved Christians,  we need  to “believe” all of God’s word  in the Bible.     That means  that we will repent  of our sins before God  and ask  for our Savior’s forgiveness  as we humbly live  to please God  according to His word.     And,  we will study God’s eternal word  to us  in the Bible  because we know  that is God’s way  of teaching His people  on earth.

Honoring God’s word  by believing  and living according to it,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  You are the Way,  the Truth,  and the Life.     Keep us very close  to You.”

Love,
Margaret
